Administering Insulin

Giving insulin shots

Using the thumb and forefinger of your non-dominant hand, pinch up the skin of your pet over the lower neck or shoulders. This will form triangle tent of skin. Hold the insulin syringe with your dominant hand so the syringe is parallel along your pet’s back, aim the needle at the center of this triangle, and insert the needle into the skin tent.  Do not be shy or the needle will not penetrate the skin. Press the plunger and deliver the insulin. Alternatively, you can part the hair and push the needle through the skin at a 45-degree angle. Try rotating injection sites, so as not to give the shots in the same place every day.

If your pet is struggling, or for some other reason you are not sure if the full dose was injected, do not give more. Simply wait until the next scheduled dose.
