Michelle Silver, DVM, DACVIM, Oncology

Firstly, Dr. Michelle Silver grew up in northern New Jersey. She knew from a young age that she wanted to work with animals. Therefore, earning her DVM at Iowa State University, she went on to a rotating internship followed by a specialty oncology internship in Virginia. She spent the year after her specialty internship doing clinical trials in Washington DC. Afterward, she completed a residency at New England Veterinary Oncology Group in Massachusetts. Her passion for oncology came about after her childhood dog was diagnosed with lung cancer while she was away at vet school. Subsequently, she was immediately drawn to the specialty. She saw the wonderful bond formed with the patient and the family as well.

Secondly, she enjoys participating in clinical trials, which bring about new and/or alternative treatment options for patients. Dr. Silver is currently enrolled in a course to obtain an advanced degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine.  Moreover, she believes in providing and discussing all treatment options with owners before deciding on which plan is most appropriate for their pet. The most rewarding part of her career is being able to improve her patient’s quality of life and providing owners additional good quality time with their four-legged family members.

Dr. Silver and her husband, Jason, share their home in Maryland with several animals which include 3 dogs: Pipsqueak, a miniature Poodle mix, Grace, a Pit Bull mix and Lou a Golden Retriever Mix, 2 cats, Ginger and Luna, and a Red Eared Slider named Flash who just turned 26. When she is not working, Dr. Silver and her family enjoy camping, hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, and pretty much anything outdoors. Dr. Silver volunteers with Pipsqueak. As a therapy team with Pets On Wheels, they visit hospitals and participate in a Paws To Read program for children. The pair has also undergone additional training and is part of a critical response team with HOPE AACR. Dr. Silver is both proud and honored to be a part of these groups.

Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care is very happy to have Dr. Michelle Silver as a member of our Oncology Department. We look forward to what her experience and knowledge will bring to our practice.
